Event Planning: Renting vs. Buying Table Linens
When you’re planning a major event like a wedding, reception or birthday, you’ll usually have to choose between buying and renting linens for an event. There are pros and cons to each option, and we’ll explore them below.
Rental linens tend to be more time-sensitive than linens you purchase. Tablecloth rentals for weddings should always be reserved at least six to ten weeks before the date so you can be sure the items you want are available. There are about 2.5 million weddings in the U.S. every year, and if you try to reserve a trending color too late, you may end up missing out.
However, rental linens can be highly convenient, especially for couples who are planning to hold backyard weddings and receptions that require a lot of self preparation. Table linens for rent are typically delivered right to your venue door on the day of the event, and the company will return to pick up the linens when you’re done.
This can be a great thing for people who are short on extra help or who don’t have the resources to wash tablecloths themselves. Table linens for rent are also less likely to be creased than linens you buy or have shipped to you.
You also won’t have to worry about spilled wine or messy eaters. The rental company will clean the linens for you.
Of course, the downside of table linens for rent is that they tend to have a higher upfront cost than buying table linens yourself. There may also be additional fees for delivery and pickup, depending on the location of your event.
Buying linens is often cheaper upfront, but then you’re stuck with table linens that you have to clean, store or sell after the event. Depending on the capacity of your washer and dryer, or the care requirements of the linens, you may end up paying more than you would have to rent linens.
There’s no answer that’s best for everyone. Consider your venue, event and situation and choose the option which best suits your needs.
